The artistic landscape we have today is an amalgamation of countless ideas and themes brought about by pioneers and visionaries who laid the very foundations of what we know as visual art today. Since the conception of what we know as visual art and through the centuries, depictions of the human experience became and continue to be an integral part of artistic expression. From scenes of historical significance to scenes of the mundane, and the individuals that experienced them.
What Joyce Ignacio focuses on in her special mini exhibition titled A Homage, is the significance of femininity in art throughout the centuries. A tribute to the masters that refined the female image and created their own modes of expression through them, with emphasis on the female gaze.
Being an integral part of Ignacio’s artistic identity, what we see is her interpretation of these iconic pieces of art. What is already conveyed through the subject’s calm demeanor and intriguing expression is supplemented by her signature use of thick textures and vivid colors of oil paints, and further complemented by splashes of mineral spirits. Along with her techniques, delicate and precise brushstrokes are used to accentuate the fine details of an already ethereal piece of art.
There is a saying that those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it, but in this particular case one must appreciate and respect the origins of a work and the era it came from. The world has constantly changed throughout time and continues to do so, but through art the most important themes and ideas persevered. To understand the present is to understand the past. With that understanding, the legacies laid down by the masters will continue to be a vital part of visual art as it should.
