One of the earth-like planets that is closest to our Sun is Proxima Centauri B. This intriguing planet is located within the Alpha Centauri system, which is approximately 4.24 light-years away from Earth. It was discovered in 2016 by a team of astronomers using the radial velocity method, which detects wobbles in stars caused by the gravitational pull of orbiting planets.
Proxima Centauri B orbits its host star, Proxima Centauri, within the habitable zone, but despite its potentially advantageous position, scientists deem it may not be suitable for human habitation. Factors such as intense radiation from its red dwarf star and possible geological instability could hinder the development of life as we know it.
